Unit 5

Neither the loving kindness exercise nor the subtle mind exercise worked for me. I tried them both several times. The Subtle mind exercise was too drawn out. It may have worked if my mind were not able to wander so much. I do not think any exercise like these will work for me. I just have too much racing through my mind at all times to be able to clear it and focus. It is a shame too. I would love to experience the relaxation that I have read about in some of the blogs.

I believe that if we do not have a balance of spiritual mental and physical well- being then the negative aspects can manifest in different ways such as if you are extremely stressed you may have anxiety attacks and have a rapid heartbeat loss of breath and perspire. It may also present itself as a common cold. I try to keep a balance of the three because my life is so busy and hectic I cannot afford to slow down.

  1. I can totally relate to the exercises not being that beneficial to me personally. I read other classmates blogs about how it helped them, but I just don't feel the same way. I liked the loving-kidness one however. The background noise of the ocean however really was relaxing. Hopefully, since life can be hectic, we are able to learn to relax. I sometimes feel that's my biggest downfall is always needing or finding something that has to be done.

  2. Hello,
I know it is hard to calm the mind. That is the point in the Subtle Mind exercise. I agree it was a little dragged out but I did enjoy this one because you were suppose to recognize your thoughts but then you have to let them go. I think that this exercise is an important one to practice and master because it will help you be able to do other exercises. Since the point of this one was to notice your thoughts and then notice them disappear it teaches you how to do that so when you do other exercises and your thoughts come up you know how to let them go. Good luck in trying to figure it out.

  3. HI, you mention you have difficulty clearing the mind with these guided meditations. Maybe a better meditation would be one with music, or chanting so that you are using another part of your brain, while calming the mind.
